Iran Accuses U.S. of Ceasefire Violations Amid Rising Oil Prices

Summary

Iran alleges U.S. breaches of ceasefire terms, citing Israeli strikes in Lebanon and drone incursions, leading to increased oil prices.

Iran has accused the United States of violating key terms of the recently established two-week ceasefire, raising concerns about escalating tensions in the region. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's parliamentary speaker, stated that Washington breached the agreement by allowing Israeli strikes in Lebanon, permitting a drone to enter Iranian airspace, and denying Tehran's right to enrich uranium.

"The deep historical distrust we hold toward the United States stems from its repeated violations of all forms of commitments—a pattern that has regrettably been repeated once again," Ghalibaf said in a statement posted on social media.

In response, U.S. Vice President JD Vance, during a trip to Hungary, acknowledged the complexities of ceasefires, noting that they are "always messy." He addressed the reported drone incident and reiterated Washington's position that Iran should not be allowed to enrich uranium. Vance also mentioned that any ceasefire covering Lebanon had not been included in the agreement.

The allegations have had immediate economic repercussions. International benchmark Brent crude futures for June delivery rose 2.52% to $97.14, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures for May added 2.72% to $96.96 per barrel. This uptick follows a significant drop in U.S. crude oil prices the previous day, marking the largest single-day decline since 2020.

Analysts suggest that refiners should take advantage of the current prices. Janiv Shah, vice president of commodity markets at Rystad Energy, advised that refiners "use this window to resume more opportunistic buying." However, he cautioned that delays in purchases, anticipating further price declines, could exacerbate product tightness even amid de-escalation.

The situation remains fluid as both nations navigate the complexities of the ceasefire agreement and its broader implications for regional stability and global energy markets.
