Trump Criticizes NATO Over Lack of Support in Iran Conflict

Summary

President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with NATO's support during the U.S.-led conflict in Iran, following a meeting with Secretary General Mark Rutte.

President Donald Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with NATO's support during the U.S.-led conflict in Iran, following a private meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, "NATO WASN'T THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM, AND THEY WON'T BE THERE IF WE NEED THEM AGAIN."

Rutte described the meeting as "very frank" and "very open," acknowledging clear disagreements between the parties. Prior to the talks, Trump had considered withdrawing from the trans-Atlantic military alliance after several NATO countries resisted his calls to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz to ease rising global oil prices.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt conveyed Trump's sentiment, stating that NATO was "tested and they failed," and accused member countries of turning their backs on the American people who fund their defense. Rutte, however, pointed out that the majority of European nations had been helpful with basing, logistics, and overflights.

Despite the tensions, Rutte credited Trump's leadership in degrading Iran's nuclear threats and noted that NATO members do not view the war in Iran as illegal, with most agreeing on the importance of reducing Iran's nuclear capabilities. In late 2023, the U.S. Congress passed legislation prohibiting any president from unilaterally withdrawing from NATO without a two-thirds Senate majority or an act of Congress.
