Israel Strikes Iran's South Pars Gas Field Amid Escalating Tensions

Israel has conducted a significant airstrike on Iran's South Pars gas field, targeting a major petrochemical facility and intensifying regional tensions.

Israel has launched a substantial airstrike on Iran's South Pars gas field, specifically targeting a key petrochemical plant in Asaluyeh. Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the strike hit "the largest petrochemical facility in Iran," responsible for approximately 50% of the nation's petrochemical production. This follows a previous attack in March, with Katz noting that the combined operations have rendered 85% of Iran's petrochemical exports inoperative.

The South Pars gas field, shared between Iran and Qatar, is the world's largest and supplies about 70% of Iran's total gas needs. The recent attacks have raised concerns over global energy security, as the facility is crucial for both domestic consumption and international exports.

In response to the March attack, Iran targeted energy infrastructures in Gulf Arab states, including Qatar's Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas facility. These retaliatory actions have further heightened regional tensions and disrupted global energy markets.

Amid the escalating conflict, mediators from Egypt, Pakistan, and Turkey have proposed a 45-day ceasefire, urging both the United States and Iran to de-escalate hostilities. However, Iran has rejected the proposal, insisting on a permanent end to the conflict.
