U.S. Deploys Additional Troops Amid Escalating Tensions with Iran

The United States is deploying thousands of additional troops to the Middle East in response to escalating tensions with Iran over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier strike group, comprising over 6,000 sailors, is en route to the region, accompanied by three destroyers. Additionally, elements of the 82nd Airborne Division and approximately 5,000 Marines are either en route or have already arrived. While many of these deployments were pre-planned, a recent surge includes about 1,500 paratroopers sent last week.

President Donald Trump has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran, demanding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which around 20% of the world's oil passes. Failure to comply could lead to further escalation.

Despite significant damage to its military infrastructure, Iran maintains control over the strait, selectively allowing passage to certain vessels while imposing tolls of up to $2 million per ship. This control has led to a sharp decline in maritime traffic, with vessel movements dropping to just 5% of February levels.

The ongoing conflict has caused global oil prices to surge, with analysts warning that prices could reach $200 per barrel if the strait remains closed.

As the situation develops, the U.S. continues to bolster its military presence in the region, signaling a readiness to escalate operations if diplomatic efforts fail to resolve the crisis.
