Artemis II Crew Reaches Midpoint to Moon, Captures Stunning Earth Images

Résumé

NASA's Artemis II mission has reached the halfway point to the Moon, with astronauts sending back remarkable photos of Earth and addressing minor technical issues aboard the Orion spacecraft.

NASA's Artemis II mission has successfully reached the halfway point between Earth and the Moon, marking a significant milestone in the first crewed lunar mission since 1972. The four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft—Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch, and Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency—are on a 10-day journey to perform a lunar flyby and return to Earth.

During a communication with mission control, astronaut Christina Koch expressed the crew's excitement: > "We can see the Moon out of the docking hatch right now; it is a beautiful sight."

The crew has shared striking images of Earth taken from the Orion capsule. One photograph, captured by Commander Wiseman, shows the planet's oceans topped by swirling clouds, with a green aurora visible at the North Pole.

In addition to capturing images, the astronauts have been conducting system checks and addressing minor technical issues. They resolved a communications problem and repaired a malfunctioning toilet aboard the spacecraft. Koch humorously noted her role in the repair, stating, > "I like to say that it is probably the most important piece of equipment on board."

The Artemis II mission serves as a critical test of the Orion spacecraft and its systems, paving the way for future lunar landings and NASA's goal of establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon by 2028.
