Construction Begins on Dannevirke's First Solar Farm; Second Project Planned for 2027

Construction is underway on Dannevirke's first solar farm, located at 440 Tamaki River Road. The Overseas Investment Office granted consent for Dannevirke SF to purchase the land on January 27. The company, a newly formed New Zealand limited partnership, is 58% owned by an Australian family trust. The land, currently part of a larger farm managed by a sharemilker, will continue to allow grazing once the solar farm is operational.

Initial site preparations began in October 2025, including fence removal, hedge trimming, and a cultural blessing. The project received resource consent in December 2023, recognizing it as regionally significant infrastructure. The facility will operate unmanned, with maintenance staff visiting periodically.

A second project, the Dannevirke Solar & Energy Storage Project by New Zealand Clean Energy (NZCE), is planned 6 km west of Dannevirke on 213 hectares of rural-zoned land off Top Grass Road. This 107 MW solar farm, capable of powering approximately 25,000 homes, received resource consent in November 2024. Financial close and construction are targeted for 2027. The land, currently used for dry stock cattle grazing, will transition to sheep grazing post-construction.

NZCE stated on its website that the project is expected to deliver long-term value to the local economy and national energy system, citing its location, grid prioritization, and dual land use as offering a compelling combination of technical, commercial, and environmental benefits.

Council officials emphasized a balanced approach to solar farms, noting the importance of renewable energy benefits while carefully considering the use of highly productive farmland and potential impacts on the character and values of rural areas.
