Three Charged in London Ambulance Arson Case

Summary

Three individuals have been charged with arson following the destruction of four ambulances belonging to a Jewish charity in London.

Three individuals have been charged in connection with the arson attack that destroyed four ambulances owned by the Jewish charity Hatzola Northwest in Golders Green, London, on 23 March. The accused are Hamza Iqbal, 20, Rehan Khan, 19, both from Leyton, and a 17-year-old dual British-Pakistani national from Walthamstow, whose identity is withheld due to legal reasons. They face charges of arson with intent to damage property and recklessness as to whether life would be endangered. The Metropolitan Police arrested the trio on Wednesday at separate locations in east London. They are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Saturday. While the investigation is led by counter-terrorism police, the incident has not been officially classified as terrorism at this stage. Frank Ferguson, head of the Crown Prosecution Service's special crime and counter-terrorism division, emphasized the importance of a fair trial for the defendants. Previously, two men aged 45 and 47 were arrested in connection with the case and released on bail until late April. Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, stated that since the attack, continuous efforts have been made to identify those responsible. She also noted the "incredible" support from the local community. Hatzola Northwest, established in 1994, is a volunteer-led organization providing emergency medical services to the north London community. In response to the attack, police have increased patrols in areas with significant Jewish populations.
