Americans' Interest in Hybrid Vehicles Surpasses Electric Vehicles in 2026

Summary

A Pew Research Center survey reveals that 44% of Americans are likely to consider purchasing a hybrid vehicle, compared to 32% for electric vehicles, with interest in EVs declining since 2022.

A recent Pew Research Center survey indicates that 44% of Americans are very or somewhat likely to consider purchasing a hybrid vehicle for their next car, while 32% express the same level of interest in electric vehicles (EVs). This marks a decline in EV interest from 42% in 2022.

The survey, conducted from March 16 to 22, 2026, amidst rising gas prices due to the U.S. military conflict with Iran, also highlights demographic differences. Democrats are more inclined than Republicans to consider an EV (47% vs. 17%). Younger adults and those residing in urban or suburban areas show greater interest in EVs compared to older adults and rural residents.

Regarding hybrid vehicles, 44% of Americans are likely to consider purchasing one, a figure consistent with 2024 data. Similar demographic patterns emerge, with Democrats, younger individuals, and urban or suburban dwellers more inclined towards hybrids.

The survey also reveals that 40% of Americans believe the federal government should encourage EV use, a slight decrease since the Biden administration. Meanwhile, 45% think the government should neither encourage nor discourage EV use, and 14% believe it should discourage their use.
