IMF Appoints Zeine Zeidane as Director of Africa Department
The International Monetary Fund has appointed Mauritanian economist Zeine Zeidane as Director of its Africa Department, succeeding Abebe Aemro Selassie.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced the appointment of Zeine Zeidane as Director of its Africa Department, effective May 1, 2026. He will succeed Abebe Aemro Selassie, who is retiring after nearly a decade in the role.
Zeidane, a Mauritanian national, brings over two decades of experience in macroeconomic policy and international economic cooperation. He currently serves as Deputy Director in the IMF's Middle East and Central Asia Department, overseeing relations with major Gulf economies and contributing to strategic partnerships, including the establishment of the IMF's regional office in Riyadh in 2024.
Prior to his tenure at the IMF, Zeidane held several senior positions in Mauritania, including Prime Minister, Governor of the Central Bank, and Economic Adviser to the President. He also worked with the World Bank and in the commercial banking sector. He holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics and a postgraduate degree in Macroeconomics from the University of Nice.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva stated that Zeidane will bring "deep institutional knowledge, sound judgment, and strong policymaking experience" to the Africa Department as it continues to address sub-Saharan Africa's growing demand for tailored policy advice, financing, and capacity development.
