Traffic on the M5 near Bristol has returned to normal following earlier disruptions caused by a crash and increased Easter holiday travel. The incident occurred on the southbound carriageway between Junction 14 (Thornbury/Falfield) and Junction 15 (Almondsbury Interchange) on Friday, April 3, 2026.
The crash led to partial blockage of the motorway, resulting in significant delays as holidaymakers traveled for the Easter bank holiday weekend. Traffic monitoring service Inrix reported: "M5 Southbound partially blocked, queueing traffic due to accident from J14 B4509 (Thornbury/Falfield) to J15 M4 J20 (Almondsbury Interchange)."
Motorway cameras showed congestion extending further south into Somerset, particularly towards the Clevedon junction. The southbound carriageway was the most affected as travelers headed to the West Country for the holiday period.
By approximately 5:00 PM, the accident had been cleared, and traffic began to flow more smoothly. However, residual delays persisted due to the high volume of holiday traffic. Motorists were advised to plan their journeys accordingly and allow extra time for travel during the busy Easter period.
The RAC had previously warned of increased congestion on major routes, including the M5, during the Easter bank holiday weekend. They recommended that drivers plan their trips to avoid peak travel times and ensure their vehicles were prepared for long journeys.
