Workplace Relations Commission Dismisses Claims of Retaliation at Wilson's Hospital School

Summary

The Workplace Relations Commission has dismissed claims by a former manager at Wilson's Hospital School alleging retaliation for reporting financial and legal irregularities.

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) has dismissed claims by Siobhán Rogers, former head of facilities at Wilson's Hospital School in Westmeath, alleging she faced retaliation after reporting over 20 instances of financial and legal irregularities during her tenure from September 2023 to July 2024.

Rogers identified issues such as falsified staff time sheets, inadequate financial controls over online banking, and misuse of fuel cards for private vehicles. These concerns were reported to the school's principal and board of management. The WRC acknowledged the validity of her disclosures but found no evidence supporting her claims of demotion, ostracization, or bullying as a result of these reports.

The commission noted that the appointment of a new manager above Rogers was intended to allow the principal to focus on educational matters and did not constitute a demotion. Additionally, the WRC highlighted that Rogers did not file a formal grievance regarding her allegations.

Wilson's Hospital School has been involved in a separate legal dispute with teacher Enoch Burke, who was imprisoned for contempt of court after refusing to comply with orders to stay off school property. Recent financial statements reveal the school's insurance costs increased by 112% to €138,966 in 2024, and legal and professional expenses rose from €47,422 to €310,651.
