Tesla Robotaxi Involved in First Recorded Accident
A Tesla robotaxi made contact with a parked Toyota outside a restaurant in Austin, Texas. No major injuries were reported.
The first recorded accident involving a Tesla robotaxi has occurred, following previous reports of safety concerns and traffic violations earlier in the month.
The incident took place in a parking lot at Home Slice Pizza in Austin, Texas. According to a video uploaded by a YouTube user, the Model Y made contact with the side of a parked Toyota Camry after completing a passenger drop-off. After the passenger exited, the Tesla vehicle attempted to navigate out of a narrow alleyway. The vehicle stopped, then started moving again, turned left, and made contact with the Camry, which was parked nearby.
No significant injuries or damage were reported. The short distance prevented major acceleration, and the Toyota's right tire was lightly grazed.
"I think the safety operator stopped it just in time," the YouTube user stated.
The reason for the vehicle's actions is unclear.
This report follows previous videos showing a Tesla robotaxi driving in the wrong lane and braking sharply after passing a police car.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating Tesla's robotaxi rollout. According to reports, the agency has contacted Tesla regarding videos of robotaxis not following traffic regulations.
"Following an assessment of those reports and other relevant information, NHTSA will take any necessary actions to protect road safety," the agency stated.
These developments occur as Tesla's robotaxi division becomes an increasingly important part of the company's strategy.
Earlier this week, Tesla reported a 14% year-over-year decrease in vehicle deliveries, with 384,122 vehicles delivered in Q2 2025, compared to 443,956 in the previous year. The decrease comes amid incidents of vandalism, protests, and increased competition from other manufacturers.
