World Bank Report Projects 50% Increase in Global Waste by 2050
The World Bank's 'What a Waste 3.0' report forecasts a significant rise in global waste generation, emphasizing the need for improved waste management strategies.
Global waste generation is projected to increase by 50% by 2050, reaching approximately 3.9 billion metric tons annually, according to the World Bank's 'What a Waste 3.0' report. This surge is attributed to rapid population growth, urbanization, and increased consumption.
Currently, about one-third of global waste is mismanaged, leading to environmental and health risks. The report highlights that food waste constitutes 38% of municipal solid waste, with low-income countries experiencing even higher proportions.
The World Bank emphasizes that investing in efficient and sustainable waste management systems can mitigate these challenges, support economic development, and create employment opportunities.
