WhatsApp Alerts Users to Fake App Containing Spyware

Summary

WhatsApp has notified approximately 200 users, primarily in Italy, who downloaded a malicious fake version of the app containing spyware developed by Italian firm SIO.

WhatsApp has identified and notified around 200 users, mainly in Italy, who inadvertently installed a counterfeit version of the messaging app embedded with spyware. The company attributed the creation of this malicious application to Italian spyware developer SIO.

"Our security team proactively identified around 200 users primarily in Italy who we believe may have downloaded this malicious unofficial client," WhatsApp stated. "We have logged them out, alerted to the risks to their privacy and security that come with downloading fake unofficial clients, and encouraged them to remove it and download the official WhatsApp app."

WhatsApp spokesperson Margarita Franklin emphasized the company's focus on user protection, stating, "Our priority has been protecting the users who may have been tricked into downloading this fake iOS app."

The company also announced plans to issue a formal legal demand to SIO to cease such activities.

This incident follows previous reports linking SIO to the distribution of malicious Android apps, including counterfeit versions of WhatsApp, designed to extract private data from users' devices.

Users are advised to download applications exclusively from official sources to mitigate security risks.
