Yemen's Houthis Launch Missile at Israel Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions

Yemen's Houthi rebels launched a ballistic missile toward Israel on Saturday, marking their first direct attack since the recent escalation in the Middle East conflict. The missile, aimed at southern Israel, was intercepted by the Israeli Defense Forces, resulting in no reported casualties.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree stated that the attack was conducted in solidarity with Iran and other "resistance fronts" in the region. He warned of continued operations until what the group perceives as "aggression" ceases.

This development has raised concerns about potential disruptions to Red Sea shipping lanes, particularly the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical passage for global trade. Analysts fear that the Houthis may target this chokepoint, echoing previous attacks between late 2023 and January 2025 that affected over 100 vessels and resulted in casualties.

In response to the escalating situation, the United States has deployed approximately 2,500 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit to the Middle East. These forces are aboard the USS Tripoli and other amphibious warships, enhancing the U.S. military presence in the region.

The internationally recognized Yemeni government condemned the Houthi actions, accusing Iran of attempting to drag Yemen into the broader regional conflict through its allied militias.

As tensions continue to rise, diplomatic efforts are underway. Pakistan is set to host talks with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey aimed at de-escalating the conflict. However, immediate breakthroughs remain uncertain.
