Iranian Missile Attack Injures U.S. Troops, Damages Aircraft at Saudi Base

An Iranian missile and drone attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia on March 27 injured at least 10 U.S. service members and damaged several U.S. refueling aircraft. Two soldiers sustained serious injuries. This marks another strike on the base, which had previously been targeted on March 1, resulting in the death of Army Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington.

The incident comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump declared Iran "obliterated" and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth claimed Iran’s military had been effectively neutralized. Despite over 300 U.S. casualties during the monthlong conflict—with 30 still unable to return to service—the U.S. government has proposed a 15-point ceasefire plan, using Pakistan as a mediator. Iran denies negotiations are underway but has agreed to allow humanitarian and agricultural shipments through the Strait of Hormuz amid a global economic disruption due to rising fuel prices.

In response, the Pentagon is preparing to deploy over 6,000 additional troops to the Middle East, including units from the 82nd Airborne Division and two Marine units. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the U.S. could achieve its objectives without ground combat forces.

The conflict has also caused spikes in global oil prices, disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and fueled economic fallout, including a declining U.S. stock market. International diplomatic efforts are ongoing, with Turkey, Egypt, and others involved. Iran has pledged retaliation, as the region braces for further escalation.
