A fire erupted on the roof of a six-storey commercial building at 296 Richmond Street West in Toronto on Friday evening. Toronto Fire Services (TFS) responded to the scene shortly after 6 p.m., confirming an active blaze upon arrival. The building, constructed in 1941, features a blend of historic charm with modern amenities, including open concept workspaces, hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, high ceilings, and private meeting rooms.
Images captured by aerial footage showed intense flames and thick black smoke emanating from the roof. At one point, an explosion was observed, with large flames shooting skyward. TFS reported that up to three propane cylinders were involved in the fire. A thorough search of the premises was conducted, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
As a precaution, Richmond Street West was closed between Peter and Duncan Streets during the firefighting operations. The building, located in the Waterfront Communities-The Island area, is known for its proximity to transit, dining, and other downtown amenities.
