NASA's Webb and Hubble Telescopes Capture Detailed Images of Saturn

Ամփոփում

NASA's James Webb and Hubble Space Telescopes have released new images of Saturn, offering enhanced insights into the planet's atmosphere and ring system.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Hubble Space Telescope have unveiled new images of Saturn, providing a comprehensive view of the planet's atmosphere, moons, and rings.

Utilizing different wavelengths, the telescopes offer complementary perspectives. Hubble's visible-light images reveal subtle color variations across Saturn's banded clouds and hazes. In contrast, Webb's infrared observations penetrate deeper into the atmosphere, detecting clouds and chemicals at various depths, from the deep clouds to the tenuous upper atmosphere.

The Hubble image was captured in August 2024 as part of the Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program, a long-term initiative monitoring the outer planets. Webb's image, taken a few months later, was obtained using Director's Discretionary Time.

These images highlight features of Saturn's dynamic atmosphere and intricate ring system. The collaboration between Hubble and Webb has previously explored Saturn's auroras and provided insights into the auroras of other gas giants, including Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune.
