ESA Investigates Fireball Over Europe and Meteorite Damage in Germany

Ամփոփում

The European Space Agency is analyzing a fireball observed over multiple European countries on March 8, 2026, which resulted in meteorite fragments damaging a house in Koblenz, Germany.

On March 8, 2026, at approximately 18:55 CET, a bright fireball traversed the skies over Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. The event lasted about six seconds, leaving a visible trail before fragmenting. Observers reported both visual and auditory experiences of the phenomenon.

In Koblenz-Güls, Germany, meteorite fragments from the fireball struck a residential house, creating a hole approximately the size of a football in the roof. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The European Space Agency's Planetary Defence team is analyzing the event, estimating the object to have been a few meters in diameter. Such objects impact Earth every few weeks to years. The timing and direction suggest the object was not detected by large-scale telescope surveys, a common occurrence for small objects approaching from bright regions of the sky.

ESA is working to improve detection rates of such objects through initiatives like the Flyeye asteroid survey telescope project. Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
