Suspicious Trading Patterns Emerge Amid US-Iran Conflict

Résumé

Unusual trading activities on platforms like Polymarket and Wall Street raise concerns of potential insider trading linked to recent US-Iran tensions.

Recent trading activities on platforms such as Polymarket and Wall Street have raised concerns about potential insider trading linked to the US-Iran conflict. On Polymarket, a cryptocurrency-based prediction platform, six newly created accounts reportedly earned nearly $1 million by correctly betting on a US strike against Iran by February 28. These accounts were funded and placed bets just hours before the attacks, suggesting possible prior knowledge of military actions.

In response to these concerns, Polymarket has updated its rules to prohibit trading based on stolen confidential information or by individuals who could influence outcomes. Similarly, Kalshi, another prediction market platform, has implemented measures to prevent insider trading, including barring political candidates from trading on their own campaigns and restricting individuals involved in sports from participating in related contracts.

On Wall Street, unusual trading patterns have also been observed. Shortly before President Trump's announcement to delay attacks on Iranian energy infrastructure, trading volumes in oil futures and S&P 500 e-Mini contracts spiked significantly. For instance, 6,200 oil contracts worth approximately $580 million were exchanged in the 15 minutes preceding the announcement. These trades resulted in substantial profits following the subsequent drop in oil prices.

Observers have noted that such trading activities are highly unusual, especially occurring before market openings and without anticipated news events. Independent commodities trader Peter Brandt commented on the timing of these trades, stating, "I've traded long enough [five decades] to know, where there is smoke, there is usually fire."

These developments have prompted calls for increased regulation of prediction markets and financial trading to prevent potential exploitation of sensitive information for profit.
