Xbox Game Cancellations and Studio Closures Following Microsoft Layoffs
Microsoft has announced significant reductions within its Xbox division.
Microsoft announced layoffs on July 2 that affect various segments of its business, including Xbox. The company is reducing its global workforce by approximately 4%, impacting about 9,000 employees. Microsoft employs over 200,000 people worldwide.
The specific number of layoffs within Xbox has not been disclosed. However, Microsoft has confirmed that the reductions include layoffs at several studios, the cancellation of certain games, and the closure of entire studios.
Statements from Microsoft Gaming Leadership
Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, sent a memo to staff regarding the layoffs. He stated that the workforce reductions are intended to support the long-term success of Xbox.
"We will end or decrease work in certain areas of the business and follow Microsoft's lead in removing layers of management to increase agility and effectiveness."
Spencer also noted that these changes are occurring during a period of growth for Xbox.
"I recognize that these changes come at a time when we have more players, games, and gaming hours than ever before. Our platform, hardware, and game roadmap have never looked stronger."
He attributed the current position of Xbox to previous decisions and outlined the company's strategy moving forward.
"We must make choices now for continued success in future years and a key part of that strategy is the discipline to prioritize the strongest opportunities. We will protect what is thriving and concentrate effort on areas with the greatest potential, while delivering on the expectations the company has for our business. This focused approach means we can deliver exceptional games and experiences for players for generations to come."

Following the announcement of the layoffs, Microsoft's stock price experienced a slight decline. Over the past five years, the stock price has generally increased and is currently near a record high. Microsoft is presently the second most valuable company globally, following Nvidia.
