Meteorite Crashes Through Roof of Houston-Area Home

A meteorite crashed through the roof of a Houston-area home on Saturday night, penetrating two stories before landing in the kitchen. Ponderosa Fire Chief Fred Windisch described the object as "a little bigger than his hand." The incident occurred in Ponderosa Forest, a suburb north of Houston.

NASA reported that the meteor became visible at 4:40 p.m. local time, 49 miles above Stagecoach, northwest of Houston. Traveling southeast at 35,000 miles per hour, it fragmented 29 miles above Bammel, just west of Cypress Station. The meteor, approximately three feet in diameter and weighing about a ton, created a pressure wave upon fragmentation, resulting in booms heard by residents in the area.

Many Houston residents reported hearing a low, rumbling sound similar to thunder, despite clear skies at the time. This event follows a recent asteroid, weighing about seven tons and traveling at 45,000 mph, that passed over multiple states earlier this week.
