Powell Emphasizes Fed's Independence Amid Presidential Criticism

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell underscores the importance of central bank independence following President Trump's recent criticisms.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has highlighted the critical role of the central bank's independence in maintaining economic stability. In a recorded speech released on Saturday, Powell stated, "We need independence to do what is right, and we need integrity to use that independence wisely." This address came shortly after President Donald Trump labeled Powell a "very incompetent guy" and suggested he "may be a dishonest guy."

The President's remarks followed the Department of Justice's decision to appeal a ruling that quashed subpoenas related to an investigation into Powell's handling of the Federal Reserve's $2.5 billion headquarters renovation. Powell has characterized the investigation as an attempt by the administration to undermine the Fed's autonomy in setting interest rates.

During his speech, Powell did not directly address the President's comments but emphasized the necessity of resisting short-term pressures to achieve long-term economic goals. He cited former Fed Chair Paul Volcker's commitment to price stability, noting Volcker's "willingness to resist short-term pressures in the interest of achieving lasting price stability demonstrated the courage and long-term perspective that define principled public service."

The Federal Reserve recently maintained its benchmark federal funds target range at 3.5% to 3.75%, following three quarter-point rate cuts last year aimed at addressing a weakening labor market. Officials have indicated that further rate adjustments are on hold until the conclusion of the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has significantly impacted oil prices and, consequently, domestic fuel costs.

Powell's term as Chair is set to conclude in May. President Trump has nominated Kevin Warsh as his successor; however, Warsh's confirmation has been delayed due to Senate Republicans' insistence that the Department of Justice drop its investigation into Powell before proceeding. Powell has expressed his intention to remain in his role until the investigation is resolved, stating he has "no intention of leaving the Board until the investigation is well and truly over, with transparency and finality."
