Zelenskyy Seeks UK Support Amid Middle East Conflict Impacting Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London to discuss the impact of the Middle East conflict on Ukraine and to seek continued support. Zelenskyy emphasized the alliance between Russia and Iran, stating, "The regimes in Russia and Iran are brothers in hatred and that is why they are brothers in weapons." He urged allies not to overlook Ukraine's needs, especially as the Middle East conflict diverts attention and resources. Starmer affirmed the UK's commitment, noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin should not benefit from the situation in Iran, whether through oil prices or the easing of sanctions. The meeting followed the U.S. decision to temporarily waive some Russian oil sanctions to stabilize global supplies amid the Middle East conflict. Zelenskyy criticized this move, expressing concern that it could financially bolster Russia's military efforts against Ukraine. Additionally, Zelenskyy met with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace and addressed members of the UK Parliament, highlighting Ukraine's advancements in defense technology, including drones and AI, and suggesting that other nations could benefit from Ukraine's experience in countering drone threats. The discussions also covered energy security and the battlefield situation, with European leaders acknowledging the risks posed to Ukraine by the Middle East conflict, including higher energy prices and the potential diversion of Western air defense systems. Despite these challenges, EU's chief diplomat Kaja Kallas stated that Ukraine remains Europe's top security priority and that attention to Ukraine will not diminish.
