US and Israel Intensify Strikes on Iran Amid Escalating Middle East Conflict

The United States and Israel have intensified their military operations against Iran, targeting strategic sites including fuel depots in Tehran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that US-Israeli forces would strike "many more targets" following these initial attacks.

In response, Iran has launched missile and drone strikes across the Gulf region, targeting countries such as Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. Bahrain reported that an Iranian drone attack caused "material damage" to a desalination plant, though water supplies remained unaffected. Additionally, a major fire erupted in a Kuwaiti government building following reports of intercepted drones and missiles by the state's air defenses.

The conflict has also impacted global oil markets, with unleaded petrol prices reaching just under $2.20 at numerous pumps in Sydney and Melbourne, as the war disrupts oil passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Amid the hostilities, Iran is in the process of selecting a new Supreme Leader to succeed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed at the start of the war. Israel's defense minister has vowed to eliminate any successor appointed by Iran.

China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, remarked that the war "shouldn't have happened" and cautioned against attempts at regime change, though he indicated that the hostilities would not derail an upcoming meeting between President Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping.

In Australia, Foreign Minister Penny Wong ruled out the participation of Australian troops in a ground offensive but stated that Australia could assist Middle Eastern nations in defending themselves against attacks by Iran.
