Asteroid 2024 YR4 No Longer Poses Threat to Earth

NASA confirms that asteroid 2024 YR4, once considered a potential risk, now poses no significant threat to Earth in 2032 and beyond.

NASA has confirmed that asteroid 2024 YR4, initially identified as a potential risk, no longer poses a significant threat to Earth in 2032 and beyond. Discovered on December 27, 2024, by the ATLAS telescope in Chile, the asteroid was initially estimated to have a small chance of impacting Earth on December 22, 2032. However, subsequent observations have refined its trajectory, effectively eliminating the risk of collision.

The asteroid, measuring between 40 and 90 meters in diameter, had previously been assigned a level 3 rating on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale, indicating a potential threat. As more data became available, the probability of impact decreased significantly. By February 2025, NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) had reduced the impact probability to 0.004%, concluding that 2024 YR4 poses no significant risk to Earth for the next century.

While the risk to Earth has been mitigated, there remains a 1.7% chance that 2024 YR4 could impact the Moon on December 22, 2032. If such an event were to occur, it could result in a visible flash from Earth and potentially create a crater approximately 1 kilometer wide on the lunar surface.

NASA continues to monitor near-Earth objects to assess potential risks and refine their trajectories. The case of 2024 YR4 underscores the importance of ongoing observation and analysis in planetary defense efforts.
