Scientists Successfully Grow Chickpeas in Simulated Lunar Soil

摘要

Researchers have cultivated chickpeas in a mixture containing up to 75% simulated lunar regolith, marking a significant step toward sustainable agriculture for future lunar missions.

Researchers have successfully grown chickpeas in soil mixtures containing up to 75% simulated lunar regolith, a development that could support future lunar agriculture. The study, conducted by scientists from Texas A&M University and the University of Texas, involved planting chickpea seeds coated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in a blend of lunar soil simulant and vermicompost—a nutrient-rich substance produced by earthworms. The fungi enhanced nutrient absorption and mitigated the toxicity of the regolith, while the vermicompost provided essential nutrients. The chickpeas matured and produced seeds within 120 days, though they exhibited signs of stress compared to those grown in terrestrial soil. This research offers promising insights into developing sustainable food sources for long-term lunar missions.
