On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate voted 53-47 against advancing a bipartisan resolution that sought to require President Donald Trump to obtain congressional approval before continuing military operations in Iran. The vote largely followed party lines, with Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky being the only Republican to support the measure, and Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania the sole Democrat opposing it.
The resolution, introduced by Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia, aimed to reassert Congress's constitutional authority to declare war. Kaine emphasized the importance of congressional oversight, stating, "I do think it's really important to put every member of Congress on the record about this."
Republicans defended the president's actions, arguing that the military campaign was necessary to address imminent threats from Iran. Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota remarked, "I think the president has the authority that he needs to conduct the activities and operations that are currently underway there."
The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a similar resolution on Thursday. House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana expressed confidence in defeating the measure, describing it as an attempt to limit the president's ability to complete the mission in Iran.
Even if the resolution were to pass both chambers, it would require a two-thirds majority to override a likely presidential veto. The ongoing debate underscores the tension between the executive and legislative branches over war powers and the authorization of military force.
