Tesla Conducts First Fully Autonomous Vehicle Delivery

Résumé

Tesla autonomously delivered a Model Y to a customer in Austin using its self-driving technology.

Tesla has announced the completion of its first fully autonomous vehicle delivery. A Model Y was autonomously transported from the Gigafactory Texas in Austin to a customer's residence, covering a journey of approximately 30 minutes. The delivery was conducted without a safety monitor or any individual behind the wheel. CEO Elon Musk stated that there were no remote operators involved at any point during the delivery. The vehicle navigated through parking lots, highways, and city streets to reach its destination. This event follows the recent launch of Tesla's robotaxi service in Austin. However, the robotaxi service has encountered operational challenges. Reports indicate instances where the vehicles entered incorrect lanes, halted abruptly, exceeded speed limits, mounted curbs, and dropped passengers in unsafe locations. In one case, a robotaxi entered oncoming traffic, and in another, it braked without clear reason, causing passenger discomfort. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has contacted Tesla to gather additional information regarding these incidents. Additionally, demonstrations have shown Tesla's Full Self-Driving software failing to stop for a school bus's flashing lights and stop signs, as well as for child-sized mannequins entering the road.
