Israel Intensifies Airstrikes on Tehran Amid Regional Tensions

Summary

Israel has launched a new wave of airstrikes on Tehran, escalating regional tensions following the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in recent U.S.-Israeli operations.

Israel has initiated its tenth wave of airstrikes targeting Tehran, as confirmed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Wednesday. The IDF announced a "broad wave of strikes targeting infrastructure of the Iranian terror regime in Tehran." Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the IDF will continue to act with full force to "crush the regime's capabilities and create the conditions for the Iranian people to overthrow it and replace it." He further emphasized that any leader appointed by the Iranian regime to continue its plans against Israel and the free world would be "an unequivocal target for elimination."

In related developments, the United States Central Command reported the destruction of 17 Iranian ships and nearly 2,000 targets, significantly degrading Tehran's air defenses. A senior U.S. admiral stated, "We have severely degraded Iran's air defenses and destroyed hundreds of Iran's ballistic missiles, launchers and drones."

The recent military operations have led to disruptions in air travel across the Middle East. Qatar Airways announced that its flights remain temporarily suspended due to the closure of the country's airspace, stating that operations will resume once the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority announces the safe reopening of Qatari airspace. Similarly, Dubai-based Emirates and Abu Dhabi's Etihad have suspended flights until March 4 and March 5, respectively.

In the Gulf region, several U.S. diplomatic missions have come under attack. A drone-related incident caused a fire near the U.S. Consulate in Dubai, which was quickly contained with no reported injuries. Additionally, a drone struck the U.S. Embassy compound in Kuwait, leading to the approval of departure for more than 200 staff and family members amid ongoing attacks from Iran and Iranian-backed groups.

Iran is preparing a three-day funeral ceremony to honor the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the opening salvos of the U.S.-Israeli operations. Reports indicate that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late leader, is being considered as a leading candidate to succeed his father.

The conflict has also impacted global markets, with Brent crude prices rising 1.6% to $82.76 a barrel on Wednesday, nearing the highest level since January 2025. This surge poses challenges for central banks as they navigate potential inflation risks amid the escalating Middle East tensions.
