US and Israel Intensify Strikes on Iran Amid Rising Global Tensions

Summary

The United States and Israel have escalated military operations against Iran, resulting in significant casualties and global market disruptions.

The United States military reported that its initial 24-hour offensive against Iran involved nearly double the number of strikes compared to the 2003 "shock-and-awe" campaign in Iraq, targeting approximately 2,000 sites. Additionally, the U.S. Navy has commenced operations to neutralize the Iranian naval fleet, with 17 ships already destroyed.

President Donald Trump indicated that the U.S. Navy might begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz to stabilize soaring energy prices caused by the conflict. The war has disrupted Middle Eastern energy exports, leading to attacks on ships and facilities, and halting production from Qatar to Iraq.

Global markets have responded negatively. In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 fell by about 3.9% during early trading on Wednesday. Seoul's Kospi index, which had dropped 7.2% on Tuesday, declined an additional 8.1% before trading was suspended. Pre-market data suggests Wall Street may open slightly lower.

Israel announced a "broad wave" of strikes on Iran early Wednesday, targeting launch sites, defense systems, and other infrastructure. President Trump stated the U.S. would cease all trade with Spain due to its refusal to allow U.S. military use of its bases for operations against Iran. He also criticized UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for permitting U.S. forces to use UK bases without directly participating in the attacks, remarking, "This is not Winston Churchill that we're dealing with."

In Lebanon, the health ministry reported that Israeli strikes on two towns south of Beirut resulted in six deaths and eight injuries. The United Nations estimates that at least 30,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon following intense Israeli airstrikes.

The U.S. Department of Defense identified four of the six American soldiers killed on Sunday during a drone strike on a U.S. base in Kuwait. President Trump acknowledged the likelihood of additional U.S. military casualties before the conflict concludes.

President Trump claimed that Iran was planning an attack prior to U.S. intervention, stating, "I think they were going to attack first, and I didn't want that to happen. So, if anything, I might have forced Israel's hand."

The Iranian Red Crescent Society reported at least 787 fatalities since the conflict began. A significant incident occurred on Saturday when a U.S.-Israeli strike on a girls' elementary school in Minab resulted in up to 168 deaths.

French President Emmanuel Macron ordered the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to move from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean to protect allied assets. The carrier will be accompanied by frigates and its air wing.

Iran has continued to launch ballistic missiles at Israel, with most being intercepted. Eleven people in Israel have been killed since the conflict's onset.
