UK's RAF Akrotiri Base in Cyprus Targeted by Suspected Drone Strike

Summary

A suspected drone strike hit the UK's RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus, causing limited damage but no casualties, amid escalating regional tensions.

A suspected drone strike targeted the UK's Royal Air Force (RAF) base at Akrotiri in Cyprus early Monday, causing limited damage but no casualties, according to the Ministry of Defence. The incident occurred around midnight local time, with the drone impacting the runway. Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides identified the aircraft as a Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicle, stating it caused minor material damage.

In response, base authorities advised residents near Akrotiri to shelter in place until further notice. Later on Monday, two additional drones heading toward the base were successfully intercepted, as confirmed by Cypriot government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis.

RAF Akrotiri, located near Limassol, is the UK's primary air base for Middle East operations, including missions against the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq, and strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen. The base has been on heightened alert amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran, with Britain recently deploying extra F-35 fighter jets, radar, counter-drone systems, and air defenses to the facility.

The UK government emphasized that it is not at war, despite allowing the U.S. to use British bases during its conflict with Iran. Middle East Minister Hamish Falconer stated, "The UK is not at war."

This incident marks the first attack on RAF Akrotiri since 1986, when pro-Libya militants targeted the base with mortars and rocket-propelled grenades, injuring three dependents of British personnel.
