Upcoming Asteroid Apophis Flyby Presents Research Opportunities
Asteroid 99942 Apophis will pass Earth in April 2029, providing a unique opportunity for scientific study. NASA's OSIRIS-APEX mission and ESA's proposed Ramses mission aim to observe the asteroid's characteristics during this event.
In April 2029, asteroid 99942 Apophis, measuring approximately 340 meters in diameter, will pass Earth at a distance of about 32,000 kilometers. This event offers a unique opportunity for scientific observation. NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, which returned samples from asteroid Bennu in 2023, has been redirected for an extended mission to rendezvous with Apophis shortly after its close approach. Renamed OSIRIS-APEX, the spacecraft is scheduled to study Apophis for 18 months, aiming to gather data on the asteroid's composition and structure. The European Space Agency (ESA) has proposed a mission named Ramses to accompany Apophis during its flyby, conducting comprehensive surveys of the asteroid's characteristics. However, the final decision on this mission is pending and expected at ESA's Ministerial Council Meeting in November 2025. These missions are anticipated to enhance our understanding of near-Earth objects and contribute to planetary defense research.
