Australians are set to witness a total lunar eclipse on March 3, 2026, with the Moon turning a deep red hue during the event.

On the evening of Tuesday, March 3, 2026, Australians will have the opportunity to observe a total lunar eclipse, commonly referred to as a "blood moon." During this event, the Moon will pass through Earth's shadow, adopting a reddish hue.

The eclipse will be visible across all Australian states and territories, with totality lasting approximately 58 minutes. In Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, and Hobart, the penumbral phase begins at 7:44 PM, followed by the partial eclipse at 8:50 PM. Totality commences at 10:04 PM and concludes at 11:04 PM. In Brisbane, the partial eclipse starts at 7:50 PM, with totality from 9:04 PM to 10:04 PM. Adelaide will see the partial eclipse begin at 8:20 PM, with totality from 9:34 PM to 10:32 PM. Perth's totality phase occurs from 7:04 PM to 8:03 PM.

Astronomer Dave Reneke highlighted the favorable viewing conditions in the Hastings region, noting the area's open skies and reduced light pollution compared to major cities. He explained that a lunar eclipse occurs when Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow that causes the Moon to appear red. This phenomenon is due to sunlight bending through Earth's atmosphere, scattering blue light and allowing red and orange hues to illuminate the Moon's surface.

No special equipment is necessary to view the eclipse; observers are advised to face east to southeast with an unobstructed view of the sky. Binoculars can enhance the experience by revealing subtle shading and the curved edge of Earth's shadow. Photographers are recommended to use a tripod, as the Moon will appear dimmer than usual during the eclipse.

This total lunar eclipse is the first since September 2025 and the last until December 31, 2028.
