US Supports Pakistan's Right to Self-Defense Amid Escalating Tensions with Afghanistan

Summary

The United States has expressed support for Pakistan's right to defend itself following recent airstrikes in Afghanistan, as both nations engage in retaliatory attacks amid rising border tensions.

The United States has affirmed Pakistan's right to self-defense following recent airstrikes targeting militant positions in Afghanistan. This development comes amid escalating tensions between the neighboring countries, marked by a series of retaliatory attacks.

Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif declared an "open war" with Afghanistan, citing the need to address security threats emanating from Afghan territory. He accused the Afghan Taliban of harboring groups like Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), responsible for increased violence within Pakistan. "We have targeted important military targets in Pakistan, sending a message that our hands can reach their throats and that we will respond to every evil act of Pakistan," Afghan government spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid stated.

In response to Pakistan's airstrikes, the Afghan government condemned the actions as violations of sovereignty, reporting civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure. Afghan authorities claimed to have launched retaliatory operations along the Durand Line, capturing Pakistani posts and inflicting casualties.

The European Union and the United Kingdom have called for immediate de-escalation and a return to dialogue. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas emphasized that Afghan territory must not be used to threaten or attack other countries and urged the Afghan authorities to take effective action against all terrorist groups operating in or from Afghanistan. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed deep concern over the escalation and urged both sides to take immediate steps toward de-escalation and re-engage in mediated dialogue.

The situation remains volatile, with both nations exchanging accusations and military actions. The international community continues to advocate for restraint and diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation.
