NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has provided unprecedented images of auroras in Uranus's upper atmosphere, offering new insights into the planet's magnetic field and atmospheric dynamics.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has captured detailed images of auroras in Uranus's upper atmosphere, marking a significant advancement in the study of the ice giant.

The JWST observed Uranus for nearly a full rotation, detecting bright auroral bands near the planet's magnetic poles. These observations revealed that Uranus's magnetosphere is tilted approximately 60 degrees from its geographic pole, causing auroras to move in complex patterns across its surface.

The study also noted that Uranus's atmosphere has been cooling since the 1990s, with current average temperatures around 307°F (153°C), lower than previous measurements.

Paola Tiranti of Northumbria University stated, "By revealing Uranus’s vertical structure in such detail, Webb is helping us understand the energy balance of the ice giants. This is a crucial step towards characterizing giant planets beyond our Solar System."

These findings provide valuable insights into the energy dynamics of Uranus and may enhance our understanding of similar exoplanets beyond our solar system.
