NASA Astronaut Mike Fincke Discloses Medical Issue Prompting Early ISS Return

Ամփոփում

NASA astronaut Mike Fincke has revealed that a medical event he experienced aboard the International Space Station in January led to the early return of the Crew-11 mission.

NASA astronaut Mike Fincke has identified himself as the crew member whose medical condition necessitated the early return of the Crew-11 mission from the International Space Station (ISS) in January. In a statement released on February 25, Fincke detailed the events leading to the mission's premature conclusion.

On January 7, while aboard the ISS, Fincke experienced a medical event that required immediate attention from his crewmates. Thanks to their prompt response and the guidance of NASA flight surgeons, his condition quickly stabilized. However, to take advantage of advanced medical imaging not available on the space station, NASA decided to return the Crew-11 team to Earth earlier than planned.

The Crew-11 mission, which included NASA's Zena Cardman, Japan's Kimiya Yui, and Russia's Oleg Platonov, launched in August 2025 and was originally scheduled to remain on the ISS until late February 2026. Following the medical incident, the crew departed the station on January 14 and safely splashed down in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego on January 15. Upon arrival, all four astronauts were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for evaluation.

Fincke expressed gratitude to his crewmates, NASA, SpaceX, and the medical staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital for their professionalism and dedication, which ensured a positive outcome. He reported that he is doing well and is continuing standard post-flight reconditioning at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

This event marked NASA's first medical evacuation from the ISS. The decision to return the crew early was made out of an abundance of caution, emphasizing the agency's commitment to astronaut health and safety. The specific nature of Fincke's medical issue has not been disclosed, respecting his privacy.

The early return temporarily reduced the ISS crew size, with three astronauts remaining aboard until the arrival of the Crew-12 mission in mid-February. This incident underscores the challenges of managing medical situations in space and the importance of having protocols in place for such contingencies.
