Microsoft Announces Leadership Changes in Gaming Division
Phil Spencer retires as CEO of Microsoft Gaming, succeeded by Asha Sharma; Sarah Bond resigns, and Matt Booty is promoted to Chief Content Officer.
Microsoft has announced significant leadership changes within its gaming division. Phil Spencer, who has been with the company since 1988 and led Xbox since 2014, is retiring from his role as CEO of Microsoft Gaming. He will remain in an advisory capacity through the summer to ensure a smooth transition.
Asha Sharma, previously President of Microsoft's CoreAI product, will succeed Spencer as CEO. Sharma joined Microsoft in 2024 after serving as Chief Operating Officer at Instacart and Vice President of Product and Engineering at Meta. In her introductory message, she emphasized a commitment to Xbox's core fanbase and the importance of human creativity in game development, stating that games "are and always will be art, crafted by humans, and created with the most innovative technology provided by us."
Sarah Bond, who served as President of Xbox, has resigned from her position. In her statement, Bond expressed confidence in Sharma's leadership and mentioned her decision to take the "next step, both personally and professionally."
Additionally, Matt Booty, formerly head of Xbox Game Studios, has been promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer. Booty assured that "there are no organizational changes underway for our studios," indicating stability within the development teams.
These leadership changes come during a period of transition for Microsoft's gaming division, as the company continues to adapt to evolving market dynamics and technological advancements.
