Mexican Military Kills CJNG Leader 'El Mencho'; U.S. Citizens Advised to Shelter Amid Unrest

Mexican forces have killed Nemesio 'El Mencho' Oseguera Cervantes, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, prompting widespread violence and U.S. travel advisories.

Mexican military forces have killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), during an operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco. Oseguera, considered one of Mexico's most dangerous drug traffickers, was fatally wounded in the raid and died while being transported for medical treatment.

The operation, supported by U.S. intelligence, led to violent retaliations by CJNG members across 20 states, including road blockades, vehicle fires, and clashes with authorities. At least 14 people have been reported dead as a result of the unrest.

In response to the escalating violence, the U.S. State Department has issued a widespread shelter-in-place advisory for American citizens in affected regions, including Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León states. U.S. government staff in these areas have been instructed to work remotely, and citizens are advised to remain in place until further notice.

Airlines have suspended flights to and from cities such as Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara due to the unrest. Southwest Airlines announced the cancellation of operations at Puerto Vallarta International Airport, citing "uncertainty on the ground," and stated that flights would resume "once it is safe to do so."

The death of Oseguera, who founded the CJNG around 2009, marks a significant development in Mexico's ongoing efforts to combat cartel violence. However, concerns remain about potential power struggles within the cartel and the possibility of increased violence in the wake of his death.
