New Zealand to Witness Total Lunar Eclipse on March 3, 2026

Ամփոփում

New Zealanders will have a prime view of the only total lunar eclipse of 2026 on March 3, with the event visible in its entirety across the country.

New Zealanders are set to experience a total lunar eclipse on the night of Tuesday, March 3, 2026. The event will commence around 9:45 p.m. local time, as the Moon begins to enter Earth's shadow, gradually dimming and adopting a deep red hue by approximately 11 p.m. Totality, when the Moon is entirely within Earth's umbra, will occur just after midnight on Wednesday, March 4, with the optimal viewing time around 12:30 a.m.

Stardome Observatory emphasized that no special equipment is necessary to observe the eclipse: "Just your eyes and a clear view of the sky. Be sure to check the forecast for your local area if you're planning to watch this dazzling celestial display."

MetService meteorologist Katie Lyons noted that, at this stage, the weather is expected to be settled across much of the country during the eclipse. However, overnight cloud cover could potentially obscure the view, so it's advisable to check the forecast closer to the event.

This total lunar eclipse will be visible in its entirety from New Zealand, as well as from eastern Asia, Australia, the Pacific, and parts of North and Central America. Partial visibility will extend to central Asia and much of South America, while Africa and Europe will not witness the event.

The next total lunar eclipse after this one is not expected until 2028, making this a unique opportunity for skywatchers in New Zealand and other favorable regions.
