UK Government Considers Removing Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from Royal Succession

摘要

Following Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office, the UK government is contemplating legislation to remove him from the royal line of succession.

The UK government is considering legislation to remove Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor from the royal line of succession following his recent arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Despite relinquishing his royal titles in October 2025, he remains eighth in line to the throne.

The government's chief secretary to the treasury, James Murray, stated, "The government is considering any further steps that might be required, and we're not ruling anything out." Removing him from the line of succession would necessitate an act of Parliament and agreement from Commonwealth realms where the British monarch is head of state.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested on February 19, 2026, his 66th birthday, on suspicion of misconduct in public office related to his association with the late Jeffrey Epstein. He was released under investigation after approximately 12 hours of detention and questioning.

King Charles III expressed his "deepest concern" and stated that "the law must take its course." The arrest marks the first of a senior British royal since King Charles I in 1647.

The Liberal Democrats have called for Parliament to consider the issue, emphasizing the importance of allowing the police to conduct their investigation without interference. Conservative MP Andrew Bowie suggested that if Mountbatten-Windsor is found guilty, Parliament would be justified in removing him from the line of succession.
