New Spinosaurus Species with Distinctive Head Crest Discovered in Sahara

摘要

Paleontologists have identified Spinosaurus mirabilis, a new dinosaur species with a unique scimitar-shaped head crest, in Niger's Sahara Desert.

Paleontologists have unearthed fossils of a new dinosaur species, Spinosaurus mirabilis, in Niger's Sahara Desert. This species, dating back approximately 95 million years, is distinguished by a large, scimitar-shaped head crest and interlocking teeth adapted for catching fish.

The discovery was made by a team led by Professor Paul Sereno from the University of Chicago. Initial finds in 2019 included jaw fragments and a distinctive crest, with further excavations in 2022 revealing additional specimens.

The head crest, likely sheathed in keratin and possibly brightly colored, is believed to have served as a display feature for attracting mates or deterring rivals.

Spinosaurus mirabilis inhabited inland river systems, suggesting it was a wading predator rather than fully aquatic. This challenges previous theories about the lifestyle of spinosaurids.

The species' interlocking teeth formed an effective trap for catching slippery fish, indicating a diet primarily composed of aquatic prey.

This discovery provides new insights into the diversity and behavior of spinosaurid dinosaurs, highlighting their adaptability to various environments.
