Mark Zuckerberg Testifies in Landmark Social Media Addiction Trial
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg testifies in a Los Angeles trial examining allegations that social media platforms are designed to addict and harm children.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified Wednesday in a Los Angeles trial addressing allegations that social media platforms are intentionally designed to addict and harm children. The case involves a 20-year-old woman, identified as KGM, who claims her early use of platforms like Instagram led to addiction and exacerbated her depression and suicidal thoughts.
Meta and Google's YouTube are the remaining defendants, following settlements by TikTok and Snap. This trial is considered a bellwether, potentially influencing numerous similar lawsuits against social media companies.
A Meta spokesperson stated the company strongly disagrees with the allegations and is "confident the evidence will show our longstanding commitment to supporting young people."
Previously, Instagram head Adam Mosseri testified, expressing disagreement with the notion that users can be clinically addicted to social media platforms. He emphasized Instagram's efforts to protect young users, stating it's "not good for the company, over the long run, to make decisions that profit for us but are poor for people's well-being."
The trial also examines features like Instagram's cosmetic filters and algorithms, which plaintiffs argue are designed to encourage compulsive use. Meta is concurrently facing a separate trial in New Mexico that began last week.
