Female IDF Soldiers Rescued from Mob Attack in Bnei Brak
Two female IDF soldiers were rescued by police after being attacked by a mob in Bnei Brak, prompting widespread condemnation from Israeli officials.
Two female Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers were rescued by police on Sunday after being attacked by a mob in Bnei Brak, an ultra-Orthodox city near Tel Aviv. The soldiers, serving as instructors at the Havat HaShomer base, were in the city for a home visit when they were confronted by a crowd that mistakenly believed they were there to distribute enlistment orders.
During the incident, rioters overturned a police vehicle and set fire to a police motorcycle. Authorities reported that at least 22 individuals were arrested in connection with the unrest.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the violence, stating, "I strongly condemn the violent riots in Bnei Brak against female IDF soldiers and Israel police officers. This is an extreme minority that does not represent the entire haredi community."
Former Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef also criticized the rioters, calling for them to be expelled from the Haredi community. He emphasized that their actions desecrated the name of Heaven and did not reflect Torah values.
The incident has intensified ongoing debates over military conscription in Israel, particularly concerning exemptions granted to ultra-Orthodox men. Recent protests have highlighted the deep divisions within Israeli society on this issue.
