Hot-Air Balloon Accident in Santa Catarina, Brazil, Results in Eight Fatalities
A hot-air balloon caught fire and crashed in Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, Brazil, resulting in eight fatalities.
On June 21, 2025, a hot-air balloon caught fire and crashed in Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, Brazil, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals. The balloon, operated by the tourism company Sobrevoar, had 21 people on board, including the pilot. A fire broke out in the basket mid-flight around 8 a.m., prompting the pilot to attempt an emergency landing. Thirteen people, including the pilot, managed to jump out before the balloon ascended again due to reduced weight. Tragically, four individuals died from burns, and four others died after jumping from the balloon during its descent. Authorities have launched an investigation expected to conclude within 30 days. Sobrevoar, which had a clean safety record, has suspended operations indefinitely. Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Santa Catarina’s Governor Jorginho Mello expressed condolences and pledged federal support. The incident occurred just days after another balloon accident in São Paulo killed one person and injured eleven. Praia Grande, known for scenic balloon rides, is a popular destination often referred to as the 'Brazilian Cappadocia.'
