An 18-year-old woman with a history of mental health issues has been identified as the suspect in a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, resulting in nine deaths, including her own. The incident began at a private residence where the suspect killed her 39-year-old mother and 11-year-old stepbrother before proceeding to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. There, she fatally shot a 39-year-old female teacher and five students aged 12 to 13. The suspect was later found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted wound.
Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) stated that the suspect had been apprehended under the provincial Mental Health Act on multiple occasions. "Police had attended that (family) residence on multiple occasions over the past several years, dealing with concerns of mental health with respect to our suspect," McDonald said.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences, stating, "We will get through this. We will learn from this." He ordered flags on all government buildings to be flown at half-mast for the next seven days.
The RCMP confirmed that the suspect acted alone and that the motive remains under investigation. The community of Tumbler Ridge, a small town of approximately 2,700 residents, is mourning the loss and grappling with the aftermath of this tragedy.
This incident is among the deadliest in Canadian history, prompting renewed discussions on mental health support and gun control measures in the country.
