Oil Prices Decline Amid U.S. Advisory on Strait of Hormuz Transit

Oil prices declined slightly on Tuesday following a U.S. advisory urging American-flagged commercial vessels to avoid Iranian territorial waters in the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration recommended that vessels "remain as far as possible from Iran's territorial sea without compromising navigational safety."

Brent crude oil futures decreased by 25 cents, or 0.4%, to $68.79 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 23 cents, or 0.4%, to $64.13. This follows a more than 1% increase in prices on Monday.

The advisory comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical passageway, with about 20% of the world's oil consumption passing through it. Iran, along with OPEC members Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Iraq, exports most of their crude via this strait, primarily to Asia.

Despite recent talks in Oman between the U.S. and Iran, which Iran's top diplomat described as off to a "good start," concerns over potential escalation and supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz persist. Analyst Tony Sycamore noted that "lingering uncertainty over potential escalation, sanctions tightening, or supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz has kept a modest risk premium intact."

In a related development, the European Union has proposed extending sanctions against Russia to include ports in Georgia and Indonesia that handle Russian oil, marking the first time the bloc would target ports in third countries. This move is part of efforts to tighten sanctions on Russian oil amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
