Clashes Erupt at Sydney Protest Against Israeli President's Visit
A protest in Sydney against Israeli President Isaac Herzog's visit turned violent, resulting in multiple arrests and injuries.
A protest in Sydney's central business district against Israeli President Isaac Herzog's visit escalated into violence on Monday evening, leading to 27 arrests, including 10 individuals charged with assaulting police officers. The demonstration, organized by the Palestine Action Group, drew approximately 6,000 participants to Town Hall, where attendees carried Palestinian flags and signs opposing Herzog's presence in Australia.
Despite prior police restrictions on marches in designated areas, protesters attempted to proceed from Town Hall to the New South Wales Parliament. Police blocked the route, resulting in clashes as some demonstrators tried to breach barricades. Officers employed pepper spray and physical force to disperse the crowd.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns defended the police response, stating, "The circumstances facing NSW police were incredibly difficult. It was, in effect, in the middle of a riot." Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna supported this view, noting that officers were "threatened, jostled, and assaulted" during the unrest.
The protest coincided with President Herzog's visit to Australia, during which he met with victims' families of the December Bondi Beach terror attack. Herzog's visit has been met with opposition from various groups critical of Israel's policies.
Organizers had planned to march through Sydney's city center, but a last-minute court decision upheld police restrictions, preventing the march. As the demonstration concluded, tensions escalated when protesters attempted to move through police lines, leading to the confrontations.
The incident has sparked debate over the balance between public safety and the right to protest, with some officials calling for calm and respect during such events.
