Researchers Develop Sustainable Method for Ammonia and Formic Acid Production

摘要

A team at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz has created a novel electrolysis method using a copper-nickel-tungsten catalyst to efficiently produce ammonia and formic acid, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional processes.

A research team led by Dr. Dandan Gao at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) has developed a sustainable method for producing ammonia and formic acid through electrolysis. This approach utilizes a novel catalyst composed of copper, nickel, and tungsten, significantly enhancing ammonia yield compared to traditional methods.

The conventional Haber-Bosch process for ammonia synthesis is energy-intensive and contributes substantially to CO₂ emissions. In contrast, the new electrolysis technique operates at room temperature and can be powered by renewable electricity, offering a more environmentally friendly alternative.

Dr. Gao highlighted three key advancements: the development of the copper-nickel-tungsten catalyst, the implementation of pulsed electrolysis to further boost ammonia yield, and the simultaneous production of formic acid by oxidizing glycerol, a byproduct of biodiesel production. This dual-product approach enhances the process's efficiency and sustainability.

The findings were published in Angewandte Chemie International Edition, underscoring the potential of this method to revolutionize the production of essential chemicals in an environmentally conscious manner.
