Hamas Leader Khaled Meshaal Rejects Disarmament and Foreign Oversight in Gaza
Khaled Meshaal, a senior Hamas leader, asserts the group's refusal to disarm or accept foreign governance in Gaza, emphasizing the right to resistance under occupation.
Khaled Meshaal, a senior leader of Hamas, declared on Sunday that the Palestinian Islamist movement will neither surrender its weapons nor accept foreign intervention in Gaza, countering demands from the United States and Israel. Speaking at a conference in Doha, Meshaal stated, "Criminalizing the resistance, its weapons, and those who carried it out is something we should not accept."
He emphasized that as long as occupation persists, resistance remains a right for occupied peoples, a sentiment he described as a source of national pride.
The U.S.-brokered ceasefire in Gaza, initiated in October, has entered its second phase, which includes plans for the demilitarization of the territory and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces. However, Hamas has consistently opposed disarmament, viewing it as a red line.
Meshaal also addressed the "Board of Peace," an initiative launched by U.S. President Donald Trump to oversee the Gaza truce and reconstruction efforts. He urged the board to adopt a "balanced approach" that facilitates Gaza's reconstruction and the flow of aid to its approximately 2.2 million residents. He warned that Hamas would not accept foreign governance over Palestinian territory, asserting, "Palestinians are to govern Palestinians. Gaza belongs to the people of Gaza and to Palestine. We will not accept foreign rule."
